Angular Velocity and Direction of Angular Velocity
Angular velocity (ω):
Angular velocity (ω) of a particle performing circular motion is defined as the time rate of change of limiting angular displacement. Instantaneous angular velocity is given by the expression:
ω = dθ / dt
and finite angular velocity is given by the expression:
ω = θ / t
Angular velocity is vector quantity and its direction is governed by right hand rule.
Direction of angular velocity vector using right hand rule:
Imagine a particle performing a circular motion. Also, imagine the axis of rotation to be held in right hand with the fingers curled around it and thumb outstretched. If the curled fingers gives the direction of velocity of a particle performing circular motion, then the direction of outstretched thumb gives the direction of angular velocity vector.
